Ed Bott - Windows 10 Support Secrets
71 CHAPTER 5 | Connecting to the Internet and cloud services Figure 5-4: Every entry in the list of known networks has these two buttons. Click Properties to see and set additional options for that saved connection. Click Forget to remove all settings for that network from your PC. Click the Properties button to see additional options, including a switch that tells Windows that you want to keep the saved security key but you don’t want to automatically connect to that network. You can also define a network as metered . If you pay for bandwidth when using a particular connection, you might want to set that option; Windows 10 treats metered networks differently from regular networks, avoiding actions like downloading large updates. Windows 10 devices equipped with wireless radios (Wi-Fi, cellular, and Bluetooth) support a feature called Airplane Mode. On the list of available networks, you’ll find a button at the bottom where you can tap to turn Airplane Mode on or off. You don’t need to be on an airplane to use this feature, though. If you’re using your Windows 10 PC in an area where no wireless signal is available, turning on Airplane Mode is an excellent power-saving measure. To control the Wi-Fi and Bluetooth radios separately, go to Settings > Network & Internet > Airplane Mode. There, you’ll find separate on-off switches for each radio in addition to the master Airplane Mode switch. What do you do if you have a wired network connection for a Windows 10 device but no wireless access point is available for your Wi-Fi equipped laptop? Beginning with Window 10 version 1607, you can go to Settings > Network & Internet > Mobile Hotspot and configure your working Internet
