Clicking Hide Updates displays a list of available updates from which to choose. Windows Defender Windows Defender is the built-in antivirus for Windows 10. Like dozens of third-party alternatives, it performs real-time scanning and occasional full scans in search of malicious software that might have snuck onto the system. When it finds a known threat, it quarantines the offender, providing a notification like the one shown here: Showing security software in action is always valuable, but it’s also something like playing with live explosives. You certainly don’t want to use actual malware to demonstrate features. So what’s the alternative? Visit eicar.org , where you can find official test files created specifically for the purpose of testing security software. Figure 3-11 shows the Windows Defender program window after I attempted to download one of the test files. Notice how I can choose to show details about the quarantined file and demonstrate to users how to click the Remove button to get rid of it (or use Restore to recover a safe file that was mistakenly identified as malware).
