Ed Bott - Windows 10 Support Secrets
13 CHAPTER 1 | Getting started with Windows 10 Figure 1-13 shows one such set of search results, from Windows 10 version 1511. Note the generic gear icon alongside each of the new settings, compared with the more familiar photo-style icons next to Control Panel options. Those gears go away as of the Anniversary Update, replaced by distinctive iconography that follows the Windows 10 design guidelines. Figure 1-13: Using the search box in Settings returns results from Control Panel, as well. Intelligent indexing finds related options even if they don’t contain the exact search term. Windows Update The name’s the same, but everything else about Windows Update is profoundly changed in Windows 10. Here are the most important differences that new users should know about: Monthly updates are cumulative If you pull a Windows 10 PC off a shelf after several months of activity, you don’t need to install all of the individual updates that were released during the intervening months. The most recent month’s cumulative update has all the updates in a single package, like the one shown in Figure 1-14.
